Executive Travel Coverage
Most group travel insurance plans exclude coverage when travelling for the purpose of medical treatment. They also often contain strict limitations around pre-existing conditions and other important exclusions. To help safeguard our members who choose to travel outside of Canada for care, we've partnered with the corporate division of CAA Travel—ORION—to offer one of the most comprehensive travel insurance programs available.

While the Best Doctors program continues to offer priority access to medical expertise and treatment abroad, it is not intended to provide full-spectrum travel assistance. That’s where ORION Executive Travel Protection steps in—offering robust, around-the-clock support for unexpected medical emergencies while travelling.
Key features include:

-
24/7/365 emergency travel assistance
-
$5,000,000 in emergency medical coverage
-
Up to 90-day trip duration, with full benefit reset upon return to Canada
-
Expanded coverage for pre-existing conditions
-
Protection against acts of terrorism
Cases & Claim Studies
Case: Brain Tumor
Clinic: UCLA
The spouse of an oil and gas executive was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Following an Expert Medical Assessment, it was determined that the ideal treatment would be gamma knife surgery due to the tumor’s precise location. However, at the time, the only specialist in Canada qualified to perform the procedure had a one-year waitlist. The alternative—traditional brain surgery—would have required an invasive open-skull operation and a five-day stay in intensive care under a medically induced coma.

Instead, she opted to travel to UCLA, where the gamma knife procedure was performed by a world-renowned neurologist. The surgery was non-invasive, and she returned home just 15 days later. Follow-up care included a CT scan at 30 days and an MRI at 90 days, both completed locally in Canada.

The total cost of the claim was $310,000 USD.
Case 2: Stem Cell Transplant
Clinic: Mayo Clinic
In this case, a client was diagnosed with lung cancer after experiencing symptoms of facial paralysis (Bell’s Palsy). X-rays of his face and neck revealed cancer in his lungs. His Canadian physician informed him that no further treatment options were available locally and recommended seeking care at the Mayo Clinic for a potential stem cell transplant. After contacting Teladoc, the client had an appointment at the Mayo Clinic within the same week and began treatment shortly thereafter. As a result, his prognosis significantly improved.

Although the benefit was capped at $500,000 CAD due to the client being over 70, the total cost of the claim came to $400,000 USD—well within the coverage limit.
Case 3: Knee Surgery
Clinic: Cambie Surgery Centre
A client injured his knee while playing squash and was initially scheduled for an MRI through the public system—five weeks out. Instead, he contacted Teladoc and received an MRI at a private clinic within two days. Just one week later, he underwent arthroscopic knee surgery at the Cambie Surgery Centre in Vancouver. From first contact to completed surgery, the entire process took less than two weeks. In contrast, the average wait time for this procedure in the public system is approximately 35 weeks.

While the claim cost was $18,000 CAD, the real value was in the time saved—and the rapid return to mobility.
